Spain: fuel station owners support diverse and inclusive energy transition

The Spanish Confederation of Service Station Owners (CEEES) stated that it welcomes the recent position taken by the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) and the European Automotive Suppliers Association (CLEPA) in support of a "more pragmatic, realistic, and inclusive" energy transition, but warns that this shift may come "too late."

In their joint letter to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, both organisations recognise the need to adopt a diverse technological approach and strategy that includes fuels such as bioLPG to achieve climate goals and that is adapted to the different realities of the market.

"CEEES has always defended technological neutrality as a fundamental principle in the necessary energy transition applied to mobility within the European Union. Therefore, we welcome ACEA's change of mind," according to the association.

“We sincerely hope it is not too late and that we still have time to avoid irreversible damage to European industry. The decarbonisation of transport cannot be achieved by relying on one technology alone. All solutions are necessary: from renewable and synthetic fuels to hydrogen, including high-efficiency combustion engines, biomethane, and bioLPG and plug-in hybrids,” they said.

Finally, CEEES highlighted that this will be a “key opportunity” to “correct course and ensure that Europe does not lose its industrial leadership in the name of a transition that is as well-intentioned as it is poorly designed.”
