Liquid Gas UK says the industry is ready to be 100% renewable by 2040

Liquid Gas UK has launched “The Industry’s Journey to 2050,” a new report that outlines significant economic and environmental benefits and evidence that the industry is delivering on its challenge with a credible pathway and is ready to be 100% renewable by 2040.

The document “highlights how renewable liquid gases are vital for ensuring a fair, affordable, and flexible transition to Net Zero - particularly for hard-to-decarbonise homes, businesses and industries that rely on flexible, clean, and efficient heating fuels,” said Liquid Gas UK.

With the right policy support, renewable liquid gases available today could deliver an 80-85% emission reduction compared to heating oil, rising to 92% by 2040 - the equivalent of removing 1.3 million cars from the road by 2050.

According to Liquid Gas UK, the industry has committed to transition fully from LPG to renewable Liquid Gas by 2040. The pathway to Net Zero has already started, as investment in production is underway.

So, the industry is on track to hit its target of providing 100% renewable liquid gases by 2040. This is because the supply is set to increase to 2040, owing to an increase in production facilities. Demand is also projected to increase by circa 10% by 2050, due to the growing pressure to decarbonise both on and off grid areas.

George Webb, Chief Executive of Liquid Gas UK said: “LPG is already supplied to hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses across the UK. The best transition for them is to switch to renewable liquid gas – the lower carbon alternative. It saves money and is better for the environment. We believe that more than one pathway to net-zero is needed for rural families, farmers, hospitality businesses, and industry to keep the heating on and bills down. It’s a no-brainer.”
