Kenya: 15,000 drivers switched from petrol to Autogas

Autogas is gaining popularity in Kenya due to its lower cost and emissions compared to conventional fuels like petrol and diesel. Recognising these benefits, the Government has implemented policies that promote LPG adoption, including zero-rated taxes on this fuel.

This has led to a surge in the number of vehicles converted to use Autogas, currently estimated at around 15,000. Moreover, the growing demand for this fuel has spurred the development of dedicated refuelling stations across the country: as of June 2024, Kenya registered 17 operational LPG stations.

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has acknowledged the rapid expansion of this infrastructure, which is key to promote further adoption of this cleaner energy source, and is developing a regulatory framework to ensure the safe and efficient use of Autogas.

The emphasis on safety comes as more vehicle owners consider making the switch to LPG and, according to the Government, proper regulations are necessary to mitigate risks associated with fuel conversions and refuelling operations.

While EPRA controls the pricing of normal fuel such as diesel and petrol in Kenya, the price of Autogas is left to the forced of demand and supply.
