WLGA Good Industry Practice Workshops and Webinars

The WLGA presented at a Good Industry Practice workshop and conference in Auckland, New Zealand for the Pacific Islands on 8th – 10th April. Over twenty delegates from ten countries registered for the event which took place over three days.

The Pacific Islands region covers more than 800,000 kms of land and millions of miles of ocean. It is a mixture of independent states, associated states, integral parts of non-Pacific Island countries and dependent states. LPG is mainly sourced from Australia and used for cooking, commercial and industrial applications. There are opportunities for transitioning away from diesel to LPG for power generation.

The Good Industry Practice (GIP) workshops utilise the materials in the suite of GIP Guides which are available on the WLGA website (Simply Safety - World Liquid Gas (WLGA)).

The latest GIP Guide, which was published in 2023, focusses on the transfer of LPG from a ship to a road tanker and was featured in a one hour webinar held on 16th May at 11am CET. (Guide to Good Industry Practices - Ship to Bulk Road Tanker Transfer - World Liquid Gas). The Guide was created with support from the WLGA Core Safety Group and a working group with representatives from BWEK, Rubis Energie, Oryx Energies, Petredec, and Vitol.

The webinar, moderated by David Tyler, presented the main contents of the Guide and members of the working group were in attendance to answer questions. Over 80 delegates attended the workshop which attracted much global interest.

Although the WLGA does not condone the transfer of LPG from a ship to road tankers, it does recognise that the practice does take place under exceptional circumstances and has done for many years. The key message to the audience was to consider all other safer options before embarking on a plan to transfer product from a ship to road tankers and if it is really necessary then to adhere to the recommendations in the guide which focuses on risk management and control mechanisms. An exit poll conducted immediately after the workshop called for more webinars of this type covering other topics such as cylinder management and Autogas.

Other Good Industry Practice workshops and webinars are planned during 2024 focusing on Africa and Asia.
